Week 4 Coursera User experience

Question 1

What does UX research focus on?

1 / 1 point
Correct

The goal of user experience research is to prioritize the user. In order to do so, researchers must focus on understanding user behaviors, needs, and motivations.

Question 2

A design team finished developing a product and successfully pushed it to the market! Now they want to know what users think. Which type of research can best help the team answer their question?

1 / 1 point
Correct

The goal of post-launch research is to understand how users experienced the product, and assess whether it was a good or poor user experience. In other words, did the design team succeed in what they set out to do?

Question 3

There are three key qualities that UX researchers usually possess. Which of the following helps UX researchers understand someone else’s feelings or thoughts in a situation?

1 / 1 point
Correct

Empathy is the ability to understand someone else’s feelings or thoughts in a situation. It’s a good quality for UX researchers to have.

Question 4

Which of the following is a primary UX research method?

1 / 1 point
Correct

Interviews are an example of a primary research method.

Question 5

A design team wants to build an application for mobile users. They’ve noticed a lack of cat owner-related apps on the market and they want to create an app to fill that void. They want to figure out what they should build. At this stage, what kind of research in the product development lifecycle should they employ?

1 / 1 point
Correct

Foundational research answers the question: What should we build? This helps designers assess what the user problems are and how they can be solved.

Question 6

Which type of bias is an overestimation of the number of people who will agree with an idea or design?

1 / 1 point
Correct

The assumption that others will think the same way we do creates false consensus.

Question 7

Confirmation bias is defined as looking for evidence to prove a hypothesis you already have. Identify a method that can help overcome confirmation bias.

0 / 1 point
Question 8

Consider the following scenario:

To decide what type of fitness app to design, the research team designs a survey to learn about gaps in the marketplace. They survey a group of fitness enthusiasts, and ask users to rate—from 1 (strongly dislike) to 5 (strongly like)—the top fitness apps on the market. Using this numeric data, the researchers calculate the average likability rating for each app.

What type of research is the team conducting?

1 / 1 point
Correct

This is quantitative research, which focuses on measurable results shared as numerical answers. Quantitative research gives you the “what,” and qualitative research gives you the “why.”

Question 9

Imagine that a design firm’s research team knows about their users’ pain points, but they need to answer a few specific questions before proceeding. To learn more, they decide to collect in-depth information on a handful of users’ opinions. What is the most appropriate research method?

0 / 1 point
Question 10

When developing a product, what are the benefits a usability study provides for design teams? Select all that apply.

1 / 1 point
Correct

Usability studies allow researchers to receive in-depth user feedback about a product. This helps researchers acknowledge the user’s actual experience, rather than relying on assumptions.

Correct

Usability studies allow researchers to observe how users interact with a product. This helps researchers acknowledge the user’s actual experience, rather than relying on assumptions.

Fiverr Gigs Ranking Tips For Maximize your Sales

Fiverr Gigs Ranking Tips For Maximize your Sales

When I started this newsletter a week ago, I started it with the pitch, “3 Ideas That Can Change Your Life.” For years, I sent out emails in that format: three ideas—one, two, three—thank you, drive through.

So consider this a throwback email. Instead of three ideas that could change your life, these are three principles for a better life.

I like principles because unlike rules or specific ideas, principles are designed to be applied loosely and broadly. Principles are things that are usually true, but sometimes don’t apply—usually helpful, but sometimes dumb as fuck.

And unlike a rule or a piece of actionable advice, principles sit in the background, quietly informing your decisions and perspectives. In that way, when good, principles can be far more effective than any sort of “do this, do that” imperative. These are three of the most helpful principles I’ve come across to steer my life. I hope you find them helpful as well.

So without further ado…

Principle #1: You Are Perfect Just as You Are… But You Can Always Be Better

I first heard this statement muttered by a zen master at a meditation retreat in my early twenties and it’s stubbornly stuck with me ever since. In fact, the older I get, the more wisdom I see in it. You are already good enough as you are… but you can also always be better.

There is an inherent tension between self-acceptance and self-improvement. This tension is within each of us. On the one hand, we want to feel at peace with ourselves, to understand that we are good, valuable, worthy human beings and we deserve love and respect and occasional backrubs.

On the other hand, unless you’re comatose, it’s abundantly clear that we have no fucking clue what we’re doing most of the time. We mess up all the damn time. There are so many ways we could be better—that we could learn more, achieve more, grow more, etc.

I love this principle because it bluntly acknowledges that this internal tension will never go away. It doesn’t matter how productive, competent, and awesome you become, there will always be something that you kinda suck at. That gnawing sense of inadequacy will never be conquered. There is no perfection, only progress.

But, at the same time, you are still a worthy and valuable human being, regardless of how screwed up you are, regardless of how many mistakes you’ve made, and regardless of how much room for growth you may have.

The beauty of this principle is that it shows that self-acceptance and self-improvement need each other—that having one without the other inevitably leads to dysfunction. If you’re all self-acceptance without self-improvement, then you become a lazy, indulgent, selfish twat. If you are all self-improvement with no self-acceptance, then you become a neurotic, hyper-critical, over-anxious mess.

Self-acceptance doesn’t work without self-improvement. Self-improvement doesn’t work without self-acceptance. You are perfect just as you are… but you can always be better.

Principle #2: Most People Aren’t Evil, They’re Just Stupid. This Includes Ourselves

A lot has been made about social media and how it affects our mental health and politics. But I believe that the most under-discussed effect of a social media-driven world is that it subtly promotes moralizing. This mass moralization has grown to such an extent that I now believe something I never would have imagined possible ten years ago: that we probably need a little less moralizing in the world, not more.

This moralizing is a problem because of how absolutely clueless and ignorant pretty much all of us are about almost every topic. When there’s a post online that is optimized to piss you off as much as possible, combined with the ease with which we demonize and judge anonymous people on the other side of the screen, combined with how easy it is to post harsh judgments and harassments, the result is a population of self-righteous, overly-moralizing fucknuts with Twitter accounts.

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that everything and everyone will, at some point, be wrong about something very significant. It doesn’t matter where your politics are, what your country is, what your personal beliefs or risk tolerances are—at some point in the last three years, you and I were wrong about something. And, in many cases, horribly wrong. Therefore, it’s safe to assume that you and I will be horribly wrong about something again.

You would think this would humble people a little bit and encourage them to withhold judgment about things. But it appears to have done the opposite instead.

Principle number two is similar to a philosophical concept known as Hanlon’s Razor: “Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.”

But I’d like to add to Hanlon’s Razor something I’ll call Manson’s Addendum: “…and pretty much everything you see or read is some degree of stupidity.”

In the past ten years, I’ve written a lot about the need to manage our attention. To me, this was perhaps the most important skill that people needed to adopt in response to an always-online world.

But as the world becomes highly polarized and angrier and disinformation spreads in every direction, I think the ability to reserve moral judgment and be slow to draw conclusions may become the next critical new skill necessary to survive in the Twitter-driven world.

Principle #3: A Little Bit of Truth Exists in Everything; But the Whole Truth in Nothing

I discovered this principle from reading Ken Wilber when I was younger and it’s served me well intellectually throughout my life. Wilber used to quip: “No one is smart enough to be wrong about everything.” Therefore, even if we disagree with someone horribly, there is always an opportunity to at least understand what may be true or useful about their views.

For example, I believe astrology is almost certainly wrong. But it’s based upon some assumptions that are probably true. People’s innate personalities do differ. These innate differences are largely predictable and measurable. And there’s even research that has shown that personalities can differ a tiny amount based on which season of the year someone is born in.

Now, that’s quite different from believing the hour, day, and month you are born can affect your whole life. But it’s something.

This ability to seek the pieces of truth in a larger, erroneous whole is an important skill to develop. For one, it makes you learn much faster. But it also makes you more sympathetic to people who believe differently than you. Most importantly, it will help you develop the ability to change your mind, when warranted — a skill that is horribly underrated these days.

Because the flip side of this principle is that while nothing is completely wrong, nothing is completely correct either. No religion, ideology, or belief system has a monopoly on the truth. And understanding that is necessary to, again, keep us learning, sympathizing, and being willing to change our minds and grow.

Because we humans derive a lot of psychological comfort in feeling as though we have found the Capital-T truth, our own little personal Final Answer. But the reminder that there is no such thing as the Final Answer of life — That life is merely an endless process of slightly fewer wrong answers to each of our questions — is not only necessary for a strong mind, it is, itself, an incomplete truth.

Font Licensing

Font Licensing

Much like any other software, fonts have licenses that legally protect them and allow their owner to charge a usage fee.

Each font comes with a licence of some sort. As such, each time you download free fonts or buy custom ones, you’re subject to specific terms of service that come with the license. You should always check what type of licence a font has, as you need to ensure the font is suitable for your project and you don’t violate the fair use clause. There are several types of font licensing — ranging from open source licenses to exclusive ones — and we’ll review the most common ones below:

Desktop and Print Font Licenses

These are the standard font licenses that allow you to use fonts offline. You can prepare and print documents and/or static images (e.g. posters) with them.

Web Font Licenses

Web font licenses are for the fonts we use on websites. These types of fonts are embedded in design projects so that browsers can read and display them correctly.

App Font Licenses

If you are developing an app, you need fonts with this licence to make sure they’ll render correctly on phones and tablets as web font licenses can’t be used in apps.

Open Source Licenses

Open source licenses offer free fonts. As an example, you can find more than 1000 free fonts on Google Fonts.

Commercial Font Licenses

Companies usually have their own commercial font licenses and designers work with the licenced typefaces used in the company’s logo and the style guide. These groups of fonts are exclusive to each company and they can’t be used by others.

Unlimited Font Licenses

When you buy a font with an unlimited license, you get the full ownership of it. In other words, with an unlimited font license, if you want to use the font for a website, app, or even commercials, you don’t have to get another license. It’ll be all covered.

Exclusive Font Licenses

Similar to unlimited font licenses, exclusive licenses give all the rights to the owner and guarantee that no one else can use that font. However, they’re usually also very expensive; that’s why they’re called exclusive.

How to know what type of license a font has:

  • Look for the licensing details on the website you downloaded the font from.
  • Check the folder that you downloaded, there might be a .txt document for copyright information.
  • If you still can’t find it, try looking it up on Google or another search engine.

Using Fonts: Best Practices

Using Fonts: Best Practices

It’s always useful to know the technical part of typefaces, but when it comes to the practical side of design, it’s all about choosing the right fonts.

How to Choose a Font?

  1. Identify your brand’s style and tone.

Fonts are an essential part of branding and they have to match the visual style of the brand. For example, if your brand is modern and technology-oriented, the visual style should be minimalistic with clean lines and shapes. In other words, you should avoid script or decorative type fonts.

  1. Know what you want to say with the font.

Fonts have to match the brand’s style, but they also have to give additional value. Decide what you want to say with a font you choose:

  • Want to create a sense of class and tradition for your law firm’s website? Use an elegant serif font.
  • Need a more modern and sophisticated look for your furniture shop’s website? Choose one of the sans serif fonts.
  • Need ideas for a handmade dress store? Look at script fonts.
  • Have an idea for a funky vintage webstore? Use decorative fonts for accents.
  1. Make sure your font is web-safe.

Web-safe fonts don’t require manual installation for the user to see them correctly.

Brands sometimes use custom (or non-web-based) fonts, which developers would then usually convert into a web-safe font. However, that doesn’t guarantee it will look good on screen. That’s why, we recommend choosing your fonts from Google Fonts, which will render perfectly in any web browser.

Popular vs Unpopular Fonts

The thing with popular and unpopular fonts is that they always change. Once, Comic Sans was one of the most popular fonts and now no designer wants to look at it. But like with any fashion trend, typography also has its own timeless fonts that you can always count on, such as the following:

tiny mce image

At the same time, there are some fonts that are not well suited for web design. We recommend avoiding these fonts at all costs:

tiny mce image

Pairing Fonts

Most of the time, it’s hard to tell at first glance if one font complements another. Here are a few tips that can help you decide which fonts to choose:

  1. Use two fonts from the same typeface.

Font families were created by classifying fonts according to their characteristics. This means that they usually complement each other well. That’s why, when using multiple fonts, we recommend you stick to the same font family. The main rule is to use different weights, just like in the example below:

tiny mce image

  1. Pair a serif font with a sans-serif.

The contrast between serifs and sans-serifs creates a hierarchy without any additional styling (e.g. bold, italic, etc.). However, there is a fine line between contrast and discord. That’s why you should stay away from fonts that are way too different.

tiny mce image

  1. Combine a heavier font with a thinner one.

As mentioned before, fonts pair well when there’s a contrast between them. Another way to achieve a nice pairing is by using different weights. The visual distinction between heavy vs. large, tall vs. skinny fonts creates a visual hierarchy that’s quick to identify. That’s why we recommend using heavier fonts for heading and thinner ones for the running text.

tiny mce image

  1. Pair distinct fonts with plain ones.

Distinct fonts immediately draw attention to themselves. Using two in the same text destroys hierarchy. If you decide to choose a distinct font type, combine it with a neutral one to keep the balance.

tiny mce image

  1. Use fonts that have different spacing between characters.
The spacing between characters in a font is called a kerning. You can use two fonts with varying degrees of kerning to create a clear hierarchy.

Main Elements of Web Design

Every website is like a human body. The internal organs — lines of code — help it function, but the body also has an external appearance. While humans have eyes, hair, lips; websites have their own main elements: lines, shapes, color palette, texture, typography, and form.

Lines

A line is a one-dimensional figure, which connects any two points. In design, it’s used to organize, direct, or separate sections. Lines can be any width or length, and go in any direction — they can even move! That’s why lines can be very useful in creating emotion or rhythm on your page.

Shapes

Shapes are two-dimensional, enclosed areas created by using lines, textures, colors, and/or other elements. Most designs use at least one of the three fundamental shapes: a circle, a square, and a triangle. By using shapes, you can create different types of moods or emotions. For example, if you have a shape with many corners, it may look sharp, active, and aggressive. On the other hand, if it’s round, it conveys a feeling of wholeness.

Color Palette

As you’ll see later in the sprint, colors convey different emotions and meanings. That’s why choosing a color palette is one of the most important decisions in web design. Color palettes are used not only for organising information or creating hierarchy, they can also have an emotional impact.

Color palettes are divided into the following types:
  • Monochromatic,
  • Complementary,
  • Analogous,
  • Split-complementary,
  • Triadic,
  • Tetradic,
  • Square.

Don’t worry if you’re not sure what these mean. You’ll learn more about each one in the coming lessons!

Texture

Texture is an illusion of how a surface feels. In web design, it adds richness and dimension to a work. While wood, paper, and glass are the basic examples of texture; a pattern (e.g. spirals, meander, animalistic patterns) can also fit the definition. Textures are mostly used as a background or a design detail.

Typography

The main goal in typography is to ensure that the text is legible on all screen types. To do so, you have to ensure harmony between every element of typography: font, size, color, spacing, and alignment.

Font

Font is the main element of typography. Much like colors, fonts have their own characteristics and create different associations. That’s why you have to choose them very carefully. Fonts are categorised into five main types:

tiny mce image

Size
Font size can help you create hierarchy within a text. You may use a bigger font size for titles and headings and a smaller font size for the body.

The recommended text size for websites is 16 px, but it depends on how much content needs to be displayed. For example, a landing page can have 16px text, while a more complex page with different types of content is more likely to have smaller font, e.g. 14 px.
tiny mce image

Spacing
Huge blocks of text are hard to read, which is why you should add white space.

You can create white space by:
  • Setting the line spacing to be 120–145% of the point size;
  • Limiting the line length of your text to 45–90 characters;
  • Adding white space between heading and the body text (the white space should be 16 px, 24 px, or 32 px).

Alignment
Alignment is crucial in typography for legibility. You can align your text and/or images to the left, right, center, or justify them.

Here’s how to use different alignments:
  • Left alignment is the easiest for our eyes to read, so it’s great for big blocks of text.
  • Right alignment is used for distinguishing short typographic elements or text blocks that act like art elements, e.g. side notes.
  • Centered alignment is quite hard to read, which is why it’s usually only used for short phrases, e.g. quotes.
  • Justified alignment works great for long texts, e.g. legal documents, academic essays, and novels, but it’s not recommended for websites.

Form

A form is a three-dimensional composition (or an object within it). Forms add depth and texture to elements that create the illusion of 3D objects.

Secrets About How To Build A WordPress Site In 30 Minutes

How to Build a WordPress Site in 30 minutes

A guide to installing, configuring and building up a blog that you
can make money from.

This ebook is intended for the Do It Yourselfers who want to learn how to
setup a WordPress site. Whether you are an individual looking to spread a
message through a blog or a small business looking to mark your place in the
internet, this guide will help you through the steps. WordPress is
revolutionary open-source software that enables people who don’t
understand coding gibberish to succeed in the online world.

I will walk you through each step from registering a domain name to setting
your site up for search engines.

Definition of WordPress: WordPress is an open-source blogging and content management

system (CMS) platform used by millions of individuals and businesses.

WordPress Introduction

WordPress is no doubt…a game changer. Started in 2003 by Matt
Mullenweg, WordPress has quickly become the world’s most
popular content management system (CMS) platform. Some

of the largest companies in the world such as Pepsi, Samsung
and Ford use WordPress as their software to operate their

sites. Nowadays, I don’t know too many people who don’t

start a site using WordPress.

By now you might be wondering why WordPress is preferred by individuals
and companies. The short answer is easy; it’s free and easy to use.

Benefits of WordPress

WordPress Can Be Adapted to Almost Any Type of Site

The magic of WordPress is that it can easily be installed to work with any
type of site. Whether you have a personal blog, business or e-commerce
site; WordPress can be the backened of your site. Once setup, you will then
be able to easily update content, add plugins, share your content with social
media tools, and get noticed by Google and more. Your audience will see the
theme (front-end) design and only you, or assigned administrators, will be
able to log into the dashboard (back-end).

Easily update content

The most beneficial aspect of WordPress is allowing non-technical
individuals to easily work the content of the site. Once setup and configured,
the owner of the site can make changes to the pages with as little as a few

WordPres Kube | www.wpkube.com
clicks of the mouse. There is no need to navigate through endless code to
find the page you need to update. If you know how to use Microsoft Word,
you will know how to add, delete and update your own website.

Search Engine Friendly

The way WordPress is organized and structured makes it friendly for search
engines such as Google and Yahoo! to recognize it. Traffic from search
engines is crucial to your website because it’s free and the visitors tend to be
more loyal because they are looking for something specific.

Themes & Plugins

There are thousands of free and premium templates and plugins available for
WordPress with hundreds created each day. I tend to stay away from free
themes but premium themes, that are customized, give companies a unique
look with half the cost. Plugins are features you download for your blog.
There are literally thousands of them that range from a shopping cart system
to a poll. The combination of both a customized theme and innovative
plugins allow for a great-looking functional site.

Here to Stay

Some CMS software eventually disappears from the market, not WordPress. I
don’t think it’s too bold of a prediction to state that WordPress will go
nowhere as long as the internet exists. There are over 25 million sites
powered by WordPress, these include some major public companies.

Cost Effective

WordPress allows for individuals and businesses to display thoughts, service
and/or products without breaking the bank. You can easily succeed in
obtaining an expensive look for a fraction of the cost. Using a premium
theme that is customized can save you thousands…literally. Our custom
designs start at $1,200 but I know companies who charge $50,000-S75,000
per website. The money you save with your new website can be invested
elsewhere such as advertising.

Types of Sites you Can Create

When it comes to WordPress, there is not much you can’t do. It started as a
blogging platform but has extended itself into being able to fully function as other
types of sites. WP is pretty much limitless in terms of creating a site other than a
blog.

| do have to say though, as blogging software, WordPress is hands down the
best compared to its competitors such as Joomla and Typepad.

Let’s dig deep into what types of sites WordPress can accomplish for you. Below
are the types of sites you can create with an install of WP.

How to Get More Subscribers and Traffic With a GA
Take Action Area + Optin Skin Bonus

For the past two weeks I’ve been secretly running a new plugin behind the scenes o* The Smart

First, an interesting and related backstory…

In January of 2010 Tlaunched a major redesign of the SPI blog, which is pretty close to what

Installing & Configuring WordPress

If your new to the WordPress game and have never setup a site before then
this step by step tutorial will walk you through it. I’ve installed and designed
over 100+ WordPress sites for myself and others and it is super easy after you
get a few under your belt.

This tutorial is assuming you are starting from scratch and all you have is an
idea lodged in your head or written down on paper.

Basic Steps to creating a WordPress based site

Register domain name
Register hosting
Install a clean version of WordPress
Point nameservers to hosting
Change password for WordPress login
Find and upload a theme
Install and configure plugins
Customize theme
Create Pages

. Setup menus

11. Configure SEO using a plugin

12. Go live with your site

1. Register domain name

Today, registering a domain name is extremely easy and affordable. I
register all of my domain names with Namecheap. I haven’t had any
problems with them and they seem to have the best prices and customer
support in the industry. Before you register a domain name, make sure you
Google for a coupon code; you can usually save a few dollars.

If at all possible, I would try to register a .com first. If that is not available a
Net is the second best. Also, I would try to stay away from hyphenated
domain names. Not only are they more difficult to remember but domain

names without hyphenated domain names will outrank you in the search
engines.

2. Register with a hosting company

I always suggest to my clients to go with Host Gator, they have been great to
me over the years. Their plans start at $3.96 per month and
they offer a variety of solutions. For the purpose of this
tutorial I will be using Host Gator.

Use promo code “WordPressKube” and receive the first month
for just 1 cent!

Once signed up you will be assigned a cPanel (hosting
control panel) user and password. This is very important, so keep it handy as
we will be using it in the next couple steps.

Note: During the signup process, you will be asked your domain name. Use the domain name you
registered with NameCheap.

3. Install a clean version of WordPress

The beauty of Host Gator is that they offer one click installs for WordPress

and other open-source platforms. eae

The second step to installing WordPress on alas cee

the relevant information. After you hit “Install
Now’ you will be given a password to your new
WordPress site. Keep this handy but you should also be sent an email with it
also.

WordPres Kube | www.wpkube.com
4, Point Nameservers to hosting

Now you won’t see your site up and running just yet. You have to tell your
domain name that you found a new home (hosting company). In order to do
so you have to set up your nameservers to point to your new hosting
company.

Finding Nameservers

on the left menu of the cPanel dashboard (bottom), you should see
your nameservers. They look like “ns1234.hostgator.com” and
“ns1235.hostgator.com. Of course these are made up and you should
not use them but the one’s assigned to you look very similar.

Setting Nameservers
after you have found your nameservers, you will need to point them to
your server. To do so, log in to your Namecheap account and find
“Nameservers” in the menu and then enter your specific nameservers
from the above.

+ CHANGE EXISTING DOMAIN NAME SERVER INFORMATION

You can change the existing domain name server (DNS) information below. This
option is typically used when you change your web hosting company etc. Please
note that it will take up to 24 hours for the changes to take effect.

Add More Nameservers

Please note that you are also free to Transfer the DNS back to us * to take
advantage of our free features like e-mail & url forwarding, dynamic dns etc.

It will take some time to update your records so you won’t see your site up
right away. It states that it could take up to 2 hours but from my experience,
it usually takes less than 45 minutes.

WordPres Kube | www.wpkube.com Bi
5. Login and change your password

After you set your nameservers to your hosting company, you will now see
your site live with the default WordPress theme called, Twenty Eleven.

You should receive an email confirmation when you successfully installed
WordPress with your site login. By default WordPress sets your login
extension as “wp-admin” so your site login will look like
http://yoursite.com/wp-admin.

You will need to enter a username, which is usually “admin” and password
(both given in email confirmation). After you have successfully login the page
that you see is called the WordPress Dashboard, you will be able to almost
anything from this screen.

Our first order of business is to change your password something you set so
you can login without any interruptions next time.

On the top right side of your WP Dashboard, you will something like “Howdy,

Devesh.” Click “Edit Profile” and enter in the new password then click
“Update Profile.”

If you are concerned or have pointed to people to your new URL beforehand

you can install a plugin that will act as aComingSoon( __) page.

Get familiar with the WP Dashboard as this is the central place where you
will do everything including create posts and pages, add categories, install
and delete plugins, configure plugin settings, switch themes, etc.

WordPres Kube | www.wpkube.com BY
6. Find and Upload a new theme

WordPress uses a templating system for its front end. You can install a
theme from your Dashboard and once activated, visitors will see that theme
in action.

There are literally thousands of free and premium WordPress themes
available. I try to stick to premium themes because they usually have better
documentations, a community for help, better coding, etc. Also, for the most
part, premium themes offer free updates to fix any issues that have been
found.

Where to find themes

I’ve worked with countless WordPress template’s over the years and below
I’ve listed the one’s I found to be the best.

Elegant Themes: Elegant Themes is a premium affordable

Thesis: This theme framework is one of the best premium
themes available for WordPress. It is a great out of the box
solution with design options in the admin dashboard.

Thesis is the theme and framework that WordPress Kube
runs on.

Theme Forest: Theme Forest is a marketplace where a
number of great designers submit their WordPress themes
available to be purchased by the public. You can find all
US types of themes for different types of sites. I’ve purchased
over thirty themes here and I’m always impressed with the
new one’s that come out.

Woo Themes: is a company who specializes in creating eye-

buying themes separately, you can also become a member
and get access to all of them!

Find the best one that suite the type of site you’re going for and either
purchase or download it to your computer. It will most likely come with
documentation on how to install it and make the necessary changes to get it
to work correctly.

Upload your theme

The next step is to upload and activate your new theme. Again, WordPress
makes it easy to install themes from the Dashboard. All you have to do is find
“Appearance” in the menu and click “Themes” then click the tab “Install
Theme.” On the screen you can search free themes or upload a theme from
your computer. After you have uploaded your new theme, click “Install

Now’ and your new theme should be ready for activation. If you are getting
an error, refer to the site or documentation inside the file to assist you.

7. Install Plugins

Plugins help you create features of your site without any coding work. There
are literally hundreds of plugins available for WordPress. You can view all
the free plugins in the official WordPress directory

(http: //wordpress.org /extend /plugins /)

You can also search & install available plugins from your WP dashboard.

Here is a list of basic WordPress plugins that are necessary to get started:

Akismet: This is the spam filter for comments on your site. Without this you could
receive hundred of spam solicitors per day!

WordPress SEO: This plugin optimizes your site, pages and posts for search
engines. You can manually enter the title, description, keywords of each post you
write!

Digg Digs: Digg digg is a very cool plugin that allows you to add float social media
buttons in your articles. It’s an all in one social media solution for a WordPress blog.

Contact Form 7: A free and beginner friendly contact form solution for WordPress
sites. All of our contact forms are powered by Contact Form 7.

nRelate Related Content: The best way to display related content: Thumbnails or
Text, on all your pages.

Backup Buddy: This plugin allows you to backup your core WordPress database.

W3 Total Cache: W3 Total Cache is the most complete Website performance
solution for WordPress. It improves the user experience of your site by tweaking
the performance of your servers and caching the every element of your site.

WP Touch: As more and more people accessing sites or blogs from their
smartphones / tablets, it’s very important to have your site optimized for mobile
devices.

WordPres Kube | www.wpkube.com Bb
8. Customizing your theme

In this tutorial, it is difficult to tell you how to customize a theme. Some
themes, like Thesis and Genesis, come with features that allow you to
structure and style your site through the dashboard.

As time goes on, I’ll have many tutorials on how to customize a theme on my
blog.

9. Create Pages

In WordPress the two main content types are Pages and
Posts. Pages are more static content such as an about page
or Contact page. These pages are more likely to be found in
the navigation bar and are less likely to change over time.
Posts are dynamic content that are constantly being
updated to show in chronological order.

In this step, it’s important to start off by creating pages so that we can set
the menu in the following step.

10. Setup Menus

A neat thing about the 3rd version of WordPress is the menu system.
WordPress allows you to set up your own menus with specific pages,
categories or custom URL’s. In order to do this, you need to go to
“Appearances” then “Menus” and then set specific pages to show up on your
main navigation. Also note that some themes come with more than one
navigation area.

11. Setup permalinks & basic SEO

Setting Permalinks: By default WordPress assigns its post and pages a unique
identifier. So, out-of-the-box your URL would look
http://www.example.com/2p=10, This should be changed so that bots and
your visitors can clearly understand the url of each post. You would want to
change your URL to look like: http://example.com/post-name. Do you see
how much better that is to identify. In order to change the permalinks you
need to go to Settings->Permalinks. In this menu, you would want to change
your permalink to “Post name” or “Custom Structure” w/ /%postname%/

Google Publisher Page:

Ifyou have a Google+ page for your business, add that URL here and link it
on your Google+ page’s about page.

In order to configure it correctly, I’ve described below a description of each
field in the plugin.

Title Template: This is also known at the meta title on your homepage. This info
can be seen at the top of browsers. Simply put, it’s what your site is about (also
known as the tagline). Make sure it is readable by a human and don’t overdo it with
keywords. Don’t forget to keep it under 60 characters; anything over the 60
character limit will not be shown.

Meta Description Temple: This is also known as the meta description of your site.
The meta description is the snippet you see in search engine’s. An important rule
here is to add valuable keywords pertaining to your site. This might be difficult as
you have a 160 character limit.

Meta Keywords: Google doesn’t crawl for keywords anymore so this might not be
as important as it was a few years ago but it can’t hurt to add them. Create a list of
keywords that relate to your site and add them. Add commas to separate each
keyword or keyword phrase.

WordPres Kube | www.wpkube.com
Other Settings: Eliminate the Home title (%blog_title%) from your post and page
titles. You don’t need this plus it leaves you less room for you actual post or page
title; which is more valuable in your SEO efforts.

**At this point, if you installed the Coming Soon plugin, make sure you deactivate it
or your site will not be live.

12. Your site is ready to go

Congrats! Your site is now live and ready for you to take to the next level. I
will share many more WordPress tutorials on my site, wpkube.com. In
addition to WordPress related articles, I will be sharing traffic generation and
social media tips at BlogPreneurs. The combination of these two elements is
essential to creating a very thriving site.

I hope this tutorial was helpful in creating a new WordPress site for you.

Best Upwork Proposal Tips to Get Shortlisted Every Time

Here’s a dirty secret. The average Upwork freelancer sends the exact same cover letter to every client they pursue. So your “competition” is a generic template from a new freelancer with no reviews 99% of the time. With that in mind, how do you move to the top of the client’s shortlist? How do you respond to projects quickly while giving yourself the best chance at winning the project and getting new clients? The tips below may only take a few minutes to implement, but over time can help your cover letters land you 50% more jobs on Upwork.Best of all, almost nobody on Upwork uses them. Most of the Upwork tips you’ll find are ultra-beginner level. They say things like “include the client’s name in your proposal.” In this post we’re going to go a little deeper. I’ve also created a PDF version of the tips in this article that you can print out and keep handy the next time you’re submitting an Upwork proposal.Send Your Best Upwork Proposals to More ClientsSince I wrote this article to help freelancers level up their Upwork lead generation game, I thought I’d mention the best way to increase your earnings: by sending more proposals. Technically, the same tips you use to send a great proposal on Upwork apply to any project. My favorite way to supplement Upwork jobs is with Folyo’s Web Design Leads Newsletter.

If you’ve already searched Upwork, and want more opportunities, my Web Design and WordPress Leads newsletters are the fastest way to supplement the work you find on Upwork. Since they only take a few minutes to review each week, it pairs perfectly with your existing Upwork proposal process and can 10x the number of proposals you send each week. That’s the easiest and best proposal tip I have: send more of them. You can get a free sample by clicking here. Some Quick Upwork Proposal StatsThat’s 12+ million freelancers using Upwork.About 3 million jobs that get posted each year. And roughly 4 freelancers for ever job.A one in four shot, isn’t bad – but if you adjust for inactive accounts and freelancers who are instantly disqualified for spamming with worthless templates … your real competition on Upwork is even smaller. Even the remaining freelancers are often beginners so your chances to make money are pretty solid.

That goes for even on the most competitive jobs. So your chances are actually pretty good. If you follow the rest of the tips in this article, you should win 1/4 of your proposals. I’ll even include some proposal templates below so you can see exactly what we’re talking about. So without further ado…

My top 10 Upwork proposal tips for getting shortlisted quicklyFirst I’m going to give you my 10 tips all at once. Then below I’ll expand on each one.Read the entire job description (and don’t flunk this test.)In your first line, acknowledge you read it.Give the client a free tip (but not how most freelancers do.)Share only the single most similar project.Write a personal, well-written, sentence.Include everything the client needs in your proposal.Find the perfect budget by using Upwork’s job history.Keep your proposal to under 500 words.Respond to all messages within 12 hours.Don’t live and die by each proposal. So, how do you implement each of these quickly? Let’s go through each one.1. Read the Entire Job Description (Don’t Flunk This Test)Too many people skim through listings before applying. Don’t make this mistake. Overlooking a key detail, such as the common “read the full description test” that clients sneak into their posts, is one of the most common ways clients filter out careless applicants. Carefully reading descriptions will also help you create more relevant proposals. 2. Get a Client’s Attention in the First LineIt’s not enough just to read the job description – you need to make it clear you read and understood what the client wants. Some clients ask applicants to answer a specific question or include a keyword in their bid proposal. If a client asks you to do this, then great, but it’s also a good idea to start tour bid by summarizing what the client is looking for.For example, if you are bidding on a job to write SEO blog posts for an artisan coffee company and the client mentions in their job post that they want to hire a freelance writer who is passionate about coffee, then you’re going to want to highlight this in your profile.Hi Client, I noticed you’re looking for someone who’s passionate about coffee. I’ve tried every coffee and espresso contraption on the face of the earth (my favorite is still my Aeropress) and have even started a blog about my love of coffee which you can read about here. You may not have the exact experience or interests that are outline in the post, and you don’t want to lie or exaggerate about your passions, but it’s important to highlight the relevant experience and interest that you do have for the subject quickly. When clients have a lot of applicants, they often will only get to see the first line of your bid when scanning your proposal. A client is more likely to click on your bid if they can see you’ve taken the time to acknowledge what they are looking for. 3. Give the Client a Preview of Your Expertise by Offering a Free TipLike most people, your potential clients are probably tired of clickbait links, sleazy salesmen, and self-appointed gurus who will do and say anything to get in their wallet. They’re looking for real solutions. You can prove you’re capable of providing this, instead of just claiming it like 99% of freelancers by offering helpful suggestion. Make sure your tip is framed in a positive way, never belittle the client’s existing work. Here’s an example:Upwork proposal sampleHi Client, I noticed you’re looking to increase page speed and are on WordPress. One of my all-time favorite tools for this is WP Rocket. I noticed you’re not using it on your site and adding it will instantly help your page speed score by lazy loading your videos and other content. I helped X client do this on their website and it was an easy way to improve their ranking by speeding up their site.Remember, your expertise might seem normal to you, but offering something simple can be really valuable to the client.4. Find the Most Similar Work in Your Portfolio to the Client’s Project and Send Only ThatClients are looking for specific skill set. Relevant examples are worth 10x more than generic ones. To instantly earn a potential Upwork client’s confidence, show them examples of projects that align with the requested work. This will make it clear that you can get their specific job done. It doesn’t take an extensive portfolio to do this. You can even do this with your first client. Here are some ways you can do this if it’s your first job:A client wants a copywriter to write up a business plan for their company. You can compile a marketing plan for another organization (real or otherwise) in the client’s industry and include it in your message. The project involves designing a custom spreadsheet. Creating a sample that fits the requirements of the project and attaching it to your proposal will prove that you have the necessary know-how for the job. The client has a video that requires some visual effects work. Find similar content and add those effects to the footage before sending it along with your pitch. These are some ways to give the client an example of your work when you don’t have a ton of experience. It doesn’t have to take a long time to show the client your work quality. Even a newbie can do this.5. Avoid Using Form Replies – Upwork Clients Can Smell Templates From a Mile AwayLook at things from the client’s perspective. Your job proposal is going to be one of many. 90% of your competition is going to use a template. Your potential clients can spot these shortcuts from a mile away; you’re better off not taking them. One personal, well-written, sentence on Upwork is a more effective proposal than the a 5000-word template.6. Pretend Your Upwork Profile Doesn’t Exist, Send Clients What They Ask For DirectlyMost freelancers expect clients to do too much work. The truth is a client will likely never see your Upwork profile. So even if you have the same work in your profile, it’s important to show Upwork clients your work, experience, and testimonials directly in the DMs you send them. This not only ensures they’ll see what you want them to, it shows the client you’re willing to take work off their plate by answering questions and requests they have directly. If the client wants to see your portfolio or examples of past work, then add them to your message. Avoid taking the opposite route and laying out expectations like “see my profile.” Aim to make it as quick as possible for a client to identify you as the most suitable candidate. Reducing the tedium of screening applicants makes you more likable. One of my favorite books: How to win friends and influence people is a must-read if you want to learn more about the methods that win potential clients over.7. Use Upwork’s Job History to Propose the Perfect BudgetTake a moment to run through the job history of any client you want to work with. This should give you an idea of what they see as an appropriate budget for the project in question. You’ll obviously want to be wary of clients who pay bargain basement prices for work.Even the most spectacular proposal can be rendered worthless if it’s attached to an unreasonably high price tag. Severely undercutting the competition is no good either. Rates that fall too far below the average indicate a lack of confidence and respect for your work. 8. Keep Your Initial Proposal Message to Under 500 WordsPopular job postings attract a lot of interest, and some clients will be inundated with proposals within an hour of posting a job. Assuming you have done enough to persuade the client to open your proposal, the last thing you want to do is bore them into a coma with a long, rambling essay about why you are the right man or woman for the job.Keep your proposal succinct and to the point. Start by acknowledging what they are looking for.Show off your expertise and provide evidence to show you’re a good fit for the roleEnd your proposal with a call to action. Invite them to discuss the job further, via telephone or Zoom, if possible. Say what you need to say in as few words as possible.
